Mile Marker Art
At our July 30, 2006 marathon, we introduced a new
way of looking at each mile. We asked local artists to create
art pieces that represented San Francisco. We recreated the pieces
into Mile Mark Banners and placed these at each mile mark on the
course. We also had a Silent Auction at our Expo to sell both
the Mile Mark Banners and the Original Art. The net proceeds went
to a RunSFM Charity and the artist.
Below you can view some of the art as well as a short bio on
our artists.

Tamar Assaf
Tamar Assaf, an emerging artist, resides
in California’s Bay Area since early 2000. Tamar
was born in Israel, where she earned her Bachelor’s
degree in Natural Science. Since her move to California,
Tamar is devoting her time to create art. In her work
she combines her travel experience with her observation
and fascination with animal concepts, investigating our
acquired perception of animals in comparison to reality.
Tamar uses thick pain and pallet knives in a way that captures
the realistic essence of the animal while maintaining an
unstructured abstract painting approach

Wendy Brayton
Wendy Brayton was born in Ashland, Oregon and raised
in the small town of Penngrove in Sonoma County. Her passion
for art was evident at a young age as she filled her time
making eclectic collages and paper mache sculptures. Brayton
went on to live in both France and New York where she continued
to study art. She returned to Sonoma County to earn
her Fine Arts degree. Brayton has developed into an accomplished
plein-air painter and now spends her time painting on location
throughout Northern California. In addition to painting,
she commits herself to community projects and recently completed
a Schultz piece that is being sent to Korea. Brayton’s
paintings focus on unique compositions, brilliant color
and light. Her plein-air style is strong compositionally
and contemporarily. Additional works with upcoming show
information can be found on Brayton’s website

Leah Chappell
Leah Chappell was born in Spokane, Washington, in 1979. When she was 8,
the family returned to California to stay, settling in Oakland. Leah’s
artistic talent and political awareness were nurtured and guided by her
mom and her older sisters, all of whom are artists and musicians as
well. Her extended family, which is extremely multicultural, provided a
rich background from which she was able to draw inspiration. The
cultural and political heritage of Oakland, as personified by the Black
Panther Party and Tony Toni Tone has also been a powerful influence in
Leah’s artistic life. Leah’s younger brother (who is also an artist and
musician), introduced her to the music of Bob Marley several years ago.
The lyrics, the music and their spiritual power changed her life. Then
she began to explore the music of the Marley children. Their level of
consciousness affected her deeply, and she began to express how the
music impacted her in portraits of Bob and his sons. After completing
these pieces, she went on to paint and draw others who she found to be
instrumental in her growth as an artist and a person, including Marvin
Gaye, her sisters and The Buddha.

Florian Charreard
-1st Piece-
Florian Charreard is an upcoming photographer
residing in Berkeley, California. Born in dense and urban
Paris, Florian was (self-)trained in photography and audio-visual
technology in Lycee Saint-Genes, Bordeaux before
pursuing a freelance career in Tahiti, French Polynesia.
He has chosen the San Francisco Bay Area to continue his
ruminations on the oddities of the urban environment. |

Florian Charreard
-2nd Piece-
His
latest collection is entitled Multiplication + Reflection. Drawing from
the repeated patterns of both hard-edged urbanity – bridges, rising
skyscrapers and street grids – as well as soft-lush tropical
tranquility – endless oceans, dramatic cliffs, and virgin forests,
Florian developed a multi-reflective collage and decoupage technique to
depict the San Francisco urban fabric in surrealistic comic.
As an Official Artist of the 2006 San Francisco
Marathon, Florian’s photos were chosen as mile markers
at Pier 39 and the Golden Gate Bridge. Contact Flo
at floriancharreard@yahoo.fr
